swallows on the wires

swallows on the wires, twittering; swifts shrieking as they barrel through the air passages of the garden in the early evening; a cuckoo heard this morning at eight from Cake’s lane. summer is hard on the heels of spring.

the hares seemed to be in some sort of trance; shortsighted, this one hardly noticed me until I walked towards it. there were four on the track and in the adjoining beet fields, tripping about in an undecided sort of way.

now the banger in the rapeseed field has been turned off I can relax, no longer scared I am going to be made to jump out of my skin. I checked the old water meadow for its usual crop of cowslips; as it is not managed any more, they almost disappear under the shag of dead grass, but they are there.

along with patches of bugle. later on in the summer there will be orchids, meadowsweet and many other flowers which it will be interesting to record here.

the bird cherry is fully out now and its sweet scent floats down the green lane.

here is a very summery picture, the cowparsley, the young wheat, the hedgerow and the distant wood but the giveaway – the ash trees are not in leaf yet.

  1. Ah – Emmett and I are envious of your bucolic country scenes. We would both like to roll around in the damp grass and then dry in the sun.
