{"id":1608,"date":"2009-09-27T09:54:38","date_gmt":"2009-09-27T16:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/09\/27\/gliding-amongst-reflections\/"},"modified":"2009-09-28T06:18:18","modified_gmt":"2009-09-28T13:18:18","slug":"gliding-amongst-reflections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/blog\/2009\/09\/27\/gliding-amongst-reflections\/","title":{"rendered":"gliding amongst reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>yesterday Miss Muppet&#8217;s crew took me along with them for a quiet little sail. it was quiet because the weather was quiet &#8211; a complete reversal from the strong winds we have had for most of September.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dog-boat.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"dog-boat.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>it was cloudy with just enough wind to get us along after motoring out of the creek.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/motoring-up-the-creek.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"motoring-up-the-creek.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we wove amongst all the moored boats and their reflections in the calm water.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/harvester.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"harvester.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Harvester, the restored Sheringham crab boat with her lovely curving lines and furled sails.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/following-the-oyster.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"following-the-oyster.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>a good way of negotiating the mix of wind tide and obstacles is to follow another sailing boat. we followed this Oyster for several tacks.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/another-crab-boat.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"another-crab-boat.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Star of Hope, another crab boat, but much smaller.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/following-2-boats.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"following-2-boats.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here we are, following two Oysters around on the next tack, between more boats.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/cornish.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"cornish.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>a Cornish half-deck fishing boat, unusual boat to see on this coast. her reflection undisturbed as we glide past.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/more-tacking.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"more-tacking.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>what seems difficult and scary, avoiding all the moored boats and the large seal trip ferries as you tack up the channel, in fact becomes part of the enjoyment of sailing here. on a quiet day, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/smelly-fishing-boats.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"smelly-fishing-boats.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>sailing past the real fishing boats, one is aware of a certain fishy aroma &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/pisces.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"pisces.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>a stately dance amongst the relections.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fishing-boat.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"fishing-boat.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>passing another real fishing boat &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/me-sailing.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"me-sailing.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and then the skipper handed over to me; this is the first time I have ever sailed a boat! it was very good to have the chance to try steering and handling the main sail on a nice big stable boat like the Cockle before sailing my little dinghy. note that I never did up my life-jacket yesterday.
