{"id":1698,"date":"2009-11-04T13:52:24","date_gmt":"2009-11-04T20:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/11\/04\/watery-viewpoints\/"},"modified":"2009-11-05T11:54:55","modified_gmt":"2009-11-05T18:54:55","slug":"watery-viewpoints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/blog\/2009\/11\/04\/watery-viewpoints\/","title":{"rendered":"watery viewpoints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>a trip to Amsterdam in three parts; firstly water and boats.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/canal-near-hotel.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"canal-near-hotel.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>on my first day\u00a0 in the Netherlands I visited Tilberg with S to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.textielmuseum.nl\/en\/agenda?agid=604\" target=\"_blank\">mina perhonen<\/a> exhibition at the Texteil Museum<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.textielmuseum.nl\/content\/TRIBAL_tsNews\/photos\/52.jpg?resize=214%2C321\" height=\"321\" width=\"214\" \/><\/p>\n<p>which was enchanting and beautiful and inspirational. afterwards we were persuaded to go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.depont.nl\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">de Pont Museum<\/a> nearby,<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.depont.nl\/uploads\/RTEmagicC_DePont_entree_01.jpg.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" height=\"225\" width=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>to see the building &#8211; an impressive modern gallery, industrial style &#8211; and the Bill Viola installation there.<\/p>\n<p>the only part of this collection of videos that we felt impelled to watch for its full time-span was the last one. mysterious pulsating navy blue water filled a deep rectangular screen, the sound-track a beating heart or a wave machine, something mechanical with a driving energy. for minutes altogether lapping shapes emerged and disappeared in the depths; light or bubbles glinted, at the base of the screen something more energetic appeared to be happening, until at last a shocking pale figure laced and bearded with elongated bubbles pierced the image from below with a roar of crashing water.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/suspended-boat.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"suspended-boat.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>so, Amsterdam, a city full of water and boats, trees dropping their leaves in the water, coots and ducks and seagulls and a surprising numbers of cars, bicycles and clich\u00e9s. I walk along the side of one wide canal, admiring boats, and rafts of shaggy wild water plants.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/leaves-on-pavement.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"leaves-on-pavement.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>up to the system of waterways curved around the centre of the old city, which I spend the morning exploring.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/leaves-in-the-canal-swirl.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"leaves-in-the-canal-swirl.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>gold and russet leaves in the water draw my eye as the canal tour buses swirl past.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/waterfront.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"waterfront.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>everywhere I look, pretty seventeenth century waterfront houses, boats, bikes, trees, birds, tourists and water bus wakes. how on earth can one find anything about Amsterdam that isn&#8217;t a clich\u00e9, while avoiding being run down by a cyclist?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/leaves.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"leaves.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bill Viola&#8217;s video stays with me all morning as I gaze into the murky waters of the canals (clean water is cycled into them every twenty four hours).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/blue-bow.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"blue-bow.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>an off the street life which is mysterious and inaccessible to the casual tourist.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/bicycle.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"bicycle.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the cool northern light reflected back by the water.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/leaves-more.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"leaves-more.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>a small boat emerges from under a bridge, approaches, then turns and\u00a0 zooms away again, a photographer aboard.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/boat-in-distance.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"boat-in-distance.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>some of these barges do tours of home life on a barge. I see locked plastic bio-loos on some quiet canal-side streets, presumably for barge dwellers.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/barge.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"barge.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am told that the canal tour buses are a great way to see Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/janewheeler.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/barge-red.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"barge-red.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>everywhere you can hear the sad off-key clang of the trams&#8217; warning bell.
